Satu-Minna Suorajärvi a sculptor based in Helsinki. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2008. Previously she has studied medicine at the University of Helsinki and worked as a licensed doctor for several years.
She has taken part in solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad, and she has been awarded in competitions for public art. Finnish museums have placed her works in their collections, and her public art works can be seen in Naantali and Tampere. She is currently preparing a public sculpture called Kastehelmi for Satakunta Central Hospital in Pori.
Recently Suorajärvi has been combining traditional sculpture and 3D technologies in her works, and she is one of the pioneers among Finnish sculptors in this field. By exploring 3D-graphics, she has also taken interest in forms created by lines, networks and surfaces. Different kinds of nets and loops can be used to describe both the structure of cell walls and gravity fields in space.
The Ribs of Infinity
Suorajärvi’s sculpture The Ribs of Infinity is from 2012. It’s a three dimensional sculpture representing the character of infinity. The artwork is formed of 200 metres of polyethylene pipe that twists around the shape of infinity and engages into its own structure.
